Award citation: "The STAR program would like to congratulate Dr. Tomas Ganz for his decades of mentorship and many contributions to the physician-scientist community. Dr. Ganz is a Distinguished Professor at UCLA, is a leading researcher in iron metabolism. He earned his PhD from Caltech and MD from UCLA, specializing in Pulmonary and Intensive Care Medicine. Dr. Ganz's research group discovered hepcidin and erythroferrone, crucial hormones that regulate iron levels and iron distribution to tissues, and has authored over 400 publications with an H-index of 170. He has served as Associate Editor of Blood, President of the International Bioiron Society, and multiple NIH study sections. Dr. Ganz has founded three biotech firms focusing on commercialization of these discoveries. He received the Marcel Simon Award in 2005 and the ASH E. Donnall Thomas Award in 2014 for his pioneering work on hepcidin and iron homeostasis. Apart from his distinguished leadership in research, he is known for his selfless mentorship. Dr. Ganz views himself as an equal team member in research endeavors, eschewing administrative prestige for hands-on involvement in the lab. His philosophy—emphasizing scientific integrity, prioritizing mentees, and valuing teamwork—has profoundly influenced his mentees and collaborators."
